But, first, it's time to go behind closed doors. That's where we talk about issues that we sometimes avoid, often because of shame or fear. Today we want to talk about so-called crack babies. And if you think about it, that term tells you everything you need to know about the way children who are exposed to crack during the height of the epidemic were dismissed, demeaned and even feared.
At the time there were all manner of pronouncements about how children who were exposed to crack in utero were destined to a life of physical and mental disability. John Silber, the former president of Boston University went so far as to say that "crack babies won't ever achieve the intellectual development to have consciousness of God," unquote.
Two decades later, we're still learning about how drug and alcohol exposure by pregnant affects their children. But it turns out that children who are exposed to crack cocaine before birth are proving these worst case scenarios were all wrong. And we're joined now by several people who know about this. Joining us are Mary Barr and her daughter Nisa Beceriklisoy. Mary is an activist who discusses her past crack cocaine use while pregnant with Nisa. Nisa is about to go off to college.
Ms. BARR: Well, the crack baby myth hadn't been, you know, advertised as much as it was later on. You know, I didn't want to drink, I didn't want to smoke cigarettes, I didn't want to really do anything while I was pregnant. But one of the reasons I kept using during my first pregnancy was because, well, like, I always like to say if pregnancy was a cure for addiction, we could just go out and get all the female addicts pregnant, and, hey, no more addiction. But it's not a cure for addiction. So, even though I thought about stopping, it wasn't that easy.
MARTIN: Did you grow up hearing what was being described around kids who had been exposed to crack in utero? Were you ever exposed to any of that? Because, you know, kids can be mean. And, you know, sometimes when kids find out something about another kid, they just use it to kind of hammer them with. And I just wondered if you had ever had heard any of that kind of conversation and if it affected any sense of who you were or what you wanted for yourself.
Ms. BECERIKLISOY: I'm a little bit eccentric. Not that I'm, like not out of, really, the ordinary, but they all kind of thought, like, I'm really funny. I kind of make crack a lot of jokes and, like, I think they said that I had ADD and it was a little bit hurtful, but it was mostly just them trying to be funny. I think the last time was I was in my AP bio classroom and my teacher was, like, she was talking somebody brought the conversation to babies who were exposed to drugs and she said that oh yeah, crack babies, they have horrible lives. They all are born like they're about to die. They're addicted to drugs their entire life. It's just a very sad existence.
Dr. BELL: The fear was that women who were pregnant who were using crack cocaine would cause some brain changes in their infants. The concern since crack is a stimulant - cocaine is a stimulant - was that these areas in the brain that dealt with the issue of stimulation like attention deficit disorder or even bipolar disorder might be overly activated or somehow distorted while the baby's brain was developing. So there were all these really silly ideas about hyper aggressiveness, attention deficit disorder, manic depressive disorder in these children.
MARTIN: If you're just joining us, this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Back in the '80s and the '90s there was a panic about children being exposed to crack cocaine in utero. Now some of those kids are all grown up and doing amazing things. And we are joined by one of them, Nisa Beceriklisoy, along with her mother Mary Barr and Dr. Carl Bell, who joins us from time to time to talk about medical issues and issues around mental health.
Is joint cracking harmful? If you are feeling pain when your joints pop, then you should seek a health care professional. In terms of knuckle cracking, some studies show that knuckle cracking does not cause serious harm. Other studies show that repetitive knuckle cracking can do some damage to the soft tissue of the joint. It may also lead to a weak grip and a swelling hand.
After the release of the album, the band was put on hiatus, as Witkowski, Macre, and D'Amico went back to the Pittsburgh area to work with the vocalist/songwriter Bill Taylor and formed the B.E. Taylor Group. They released an independent 12" EP and eventually signed to MCA records for two full-length LPs: Innermission and Love Won the Fight. The group's catchy single release of "Vitamin L" (written by Witkowski, produced by Macre and Witkowski, and sung by D'Amico) from the latter album found its way into Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1984. The success of this single led to the group being signed to CBS Records, where they recorded and released a third album, Our World in 1986.
In 2008, Joey D'Amico and Joe Macre returned as Crack the Sky's drummer and bassist, respectively. Additionally, the band headlined the ROSfest progressive music festival and later a full-length DVD of their performance called Crack the Sky, All Access was produced and engineered by Macre. The DVD was shot on six hi-def cameras in 5.1 surround sound and includes pictures and interviews with the band members.
Pinky side for fists:That is half protected in the small fists I tried. The palm side is still open. I had the same with the ocun and bd gloves. I will add a bit of tape next time I try a fist crack.
Thickness of the gloves:I found that the Ocun and Decathlon gloves are a bit more padded. If you can see past the cloth in between your fingers these gloves a bit better if you do not enjoy pain. That said, crack climbing is dumb if you mind the pain.I enjoy the direct contact of these gloves more than these above. I think only the BD gloves are a bit thinner still.
At first I was surprised how tight the finger loops are (I did measure my hand), but I do enjoy the tight fit. My only general concern about the gloves is the stitching on the sides of the glove (pinky and pointer finger) seem a bit strained with the rubber wrapping around the hand. Hopefully this will last as long as the rest of the glove.
Very nice gloves. Although they seem small in the beginning (especially around the fingers), they fit nicely after some use. Total price for me (gloves+shipping+import tax) was 50 euro a pair, which is maybe not really worth it compared to other brands. (although i do feel more psyched when having the WideBoyz logo on my gloves :p )After using one week in granite cracks, some of the green stitching at the side already came undone.
Only had one day with these at the crag was very happy with them did a fist jam (I hate fist jams) and felt secure with much less pain than if I had done it with outh the crack gloves (I have too many scars from painful jams this gives me hope this will be a less frequent occurance)
Excellent! At first looked small when trying at home, but felt good when climbing. Tried in a 6b+ hand crack, friction and comfort was good. Only comment is having a strap to help gettting the thumb loop off.
As people (and other creatures) get older, their joints begin to crack and pop, despite their best efforts. Sometimes this is painful; sometimes it also prevents the crack-ee from being able to move. Arthritis and Rheumatism set in. You get the picture. It can even start as early as middle age when a person still looks young and hale, but finds they're not as young as they used to be when they try to act as young as they feel. It's often an old person just trying to stand up or do something ordinary, emphasizing the creaky, fragile state of an elderly body.

A person is normally advised not to try and crack their neck themselves if they are experiencing pain or problems with this part of their body.
